Unlocking opportunties: New free e-learning course for teachers

New free e-learning course for teachers

The Equality and Human Rights Commission, in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University, has developed a new e-learning course for teachers to help meet the rights of disabled learners under the reasonable adjustments duty.  ‘Unlocking Opportunities’ is aimed at all schools to help teachers, special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs) and extra-curricular activity providers remove barriers to learning for disabled children and young people

“Disabled children have the same right to a quality education as everyone else. This resource is about making sure they have positive, fulfilling experiences in their lessons, in sport and all extra-curricular activities organised by the school.

“Disabled children have the same ambitions as non-disabled children but their life chances are significantly diminished. Changing this must start with schools.”

Chris Holmes, Commissioner at the Equality and Human Rights Commission and one of Britain’s greatest Paralympians, describes why the Unlocking Opportunities course is so important.

Why should teachers register?

All schools are required to take steps to remove or prevent barriers to learning for disabled children and young people. The course is packed with real life case studies and practical examples from schools.

Examples include how to manage:

  • Asthma.
  • Food allergies.
  • Hearing and visual impairments.
  • Learning difficulties and mental health issues.
